Essential Items You Need Before Setting Off on Your Jetski/ Seadoo Adventure

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to the thrill of water sports, setting off on your jetski or Seadoo requires proper preparation. In this guide, we'll walk you through the essential items you need to carry before you set off, along with some useful tips to make your jetski experience as smooth as possible.
Personal Flotation Device (PFD) / Life Jacket
The most critical piece of equipment on your jetski is a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or life jacket. In most places, it is required by law to wear a PFD while riding a jetski. The life jacket helps keep you afloat if you fall off and is designed to ensure your safety while on the water.
Choose a PFD specifically designed for personal watercraft use. It should be comfortable and allow you to move freely. It’s important to ensure the life jacket fits well, as a loose or too-tight PFD may not function properly in an emergency.
Tips: Always check the condition of your PFD before setting off and make sure all passengers on the Seadoo also have life jackets that fit properly.
Safety Lanyard (Kill Switch)
Another important item to bring with you on your jetski is the safety lanyard, also known as the kill switch. This lanyard attaches to your wrist or life jacket and shuts off the engine if you fall off your Seadoo. This feature is crucial because it prevents the jetski from continuing to run without you, which can lead to dangerous situations.
Tips: Always keep a spare lanyard on hand in case the original one gets damaged or lost.
Fire Extinguisher
Although it may seem unlikely, fire can happen on a jetski, especially in the engine compartment. Having a small marine-rated fire extinguisher on board is essential. Make sure that the fire extinguisher is designed for marine use and is easily accessible while you're on your Seadoo.
Regularly check that the fire extinguisher is fully charged and in working condition. While you may never need it, it’s better to have it on board just in case of an emergency.
Tips: Store the fire extinguisher in an easily accessible spot on your jetski and ensure it is properly secured.
Whistle or Sound Signaling Device
A whistle or other sound signalling device is a requirement for jetski in most regions. This device allows you to signal for help if needed or to alert other watercraft of your presence. The whistle should be attached to your life jacket, making it easy to reach in an emergency.
Tips: Opt for a marine-grade whistle that works even when wet, and ensure it’s securely fastened to your PFD.
First Aid Kit
A well-stocked first aid kit is a must-have on any jetski trip. Accidents can happen, and having the basic supplies to treat minor injuries can make a significant difference. Your first aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, adhesive tape, and any necessary medications you or your passengers may need.
Tips: Pack the first aid kit in a waterproof container to prevent the supplies from getting damaged.
Waterproof Cell Phone Case or VHF Radio
Communication is essential while out on the water. Always bring a cell phone in a waterproof case or, even better, a VHF marine radio. A waterproof cell phone case will help keep your phone safe from splashes or accidental drops into the water. On the other hand, a VHF radio provides a more reliable way to communicate in case of an emergency, especially in areas with poor cell coverage.
Tips: Test your cell phone case for waterproof capability before heading out. For longer rides, a VHF radio is highly recommended for better safety.
Navigation Tools
Before setting off on your Seadoo, make sure you have some basic navigation tools. A waterproof map or a GPS device or a compass can help you stay on course and avoid getting lost. Some newer jetski even have built-in GPS, but it’s still a good idea to have a backup like a map in case of electronic failure.
Tips: Plot your route ahead of time, especially if you’re exploring unfamiliar waters. This helps you understand where any hazards might be and ensures you have enough fuel for the journey.
Dock Lines and Anchor
Carrying dock lines is essential for securing your jetski when you need to stop at a dock or tie up to another watercraft. An anchor is also a useful item to bring if you plan to stop and relax in open water. The anchor ensures that your Seadoo stays in place rather than drifting away.
Make sure the anchor is appropriate for your jetski's size, and always double-check that you have enough line for the depth of water you'll be in.
Tips: Practice tying knots for securing your jetski properly; this is especially useful if you need to dock in windy conditions.
Tow Rope
A tow rope is a handy item to bring along in case you or someone else runs into trouble. Whether your jetski breaks down or you need to help tow another rider, a tow rope can be invaluable.
Tips: Make sure your tow rope is strong enough to pull a jetski and that it’s stored securely onboard.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses
Spending a day on the water means you’ll be exposed to a lot of sun. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential to protect your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen should be waterproof and reapplied regularly, especially after getting wet. Maybe even a sun-reflective umbrella in case u get stuck for long periods.
Tips: Choose polarized sunglasses to reduce glare from the water, which can help you see better and ride more comfortably.
