What To Do If You Tip Over Your Jetski: Rollover Tips & Best Practices!

🌊 What To Do If You Tip Over Your Jetski: Rollover Tips & Best Practices!

Let’s face it—if you're out ripping across the lake or tearing it up in the bay, there's always a chance your jetski might take a tumble. Whether you're riding a Sea-Doo, Yamaha, or Kawasaki, tipping over happens to the best of us. The good news? It’s not the end of the world—as long as you know the right way to roll over your jetski.

Here’s how to stay safe, protect your engine, and get back to the fun fast! 🛥️💦

🚤 First Things First: Don’t Panic!

If you tip over your jetski, stay calm. You're likely wearing a life jacket (please tell us you are!), so float next to your watercraft, take a deep breath, and assess the situation.

🔄 Which Way Do I Roll My Jetski?

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t always matter which way you roll your jetski over, as long as you keep the exhaust out of the water.

Why? Because water getting into the engine or exhaust system can lead to big (and expensive) problems like hydro lock. Your jetski is designed to be righted in a specific direction to minimize this risk—and it tells you how to do it.

📌 Check the Rear Sticker – Seriously!

Every modern jetski, including all Sea-Doo models, has a handy rollover sticker on the back near the stern. It shows you exactly which direction to roll it: either clockwise or counterclockwise.

Follow that direction.
Why? Because it’s specific to how your engine, exhaust, and fuel systems are set up. Even if you think you know better, always trust the sticker.

Best practice: Before hitting the water, take 10 seconds to look at your sticker so you're not guessing mid-flip.

🛠️ Step-by-Step: How to Roll Over Your Jetski

Here’s your quick and clear guide to flipping your jetski upright like a pro:

  1. Swim to the rear of your jetski
Approach from the back (stern), not the side. This helps you avoid injury from the handlebars or hull. MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS OFF !

  2. Check the rollover sticker
Look for the rollover direction sticker—usually found on the back of the jetski near the pump or boarding step.

  3. Grab  the intake grate or ride plate
One hand on the intake , the other on the side . Make sure you have a good grip. As you hold the grate pull your self up and lean back and the jetski will slowly roll over.

  4. Roll in the direction indicated by the sticker
This might be clockwise or counterclockwise—follow what your specific jetski says. Roll smoothly and firmly.

  5. Right the jetski completely
Make sure it’s fully upright before you try to climb back on. The engine should be above the waterline.

  6. Climb on from the rear
Use the rear boarding platform or step. Avoid trying to pull yourself up from the side, which could flip it again.

  7. Start the engine
Try to start it immediately. If it doesn’t start within a few tries, don’t force it. Tow it back to shore and have a tech look at it.

💡 Bonus Tip: Practice in Shallow Water

If you’re new to jetskiing or have a new model, it’s smart to practice a safe rollover recovery in shallow water. Learn how your Sea-Doo handles when it tips so that you’re not figuring it out during a real spill.

⚙️ After You Get It Upright

Once you've flipped your jetski the right way, follow these steps:

  1. Climb back on from the rear boarding step or platform.

  2. Start the engine as soon as possible.

  3. If it doesn't start right away, don’t crank for too long—water may be in the engine. Tow it back to shore and have it checked.

🛡️ Final Thoughts: Ride Smart, Flip Smarter

Tipping over your jetski isn’t the end of your day—it’s just a bump in the ride. By knowing how to do a proper jetski rollover, you protect your engine, your wallet, and your fun.

Remember:

  • Keep the exhaust out of the water

  • Follow the sticker

  • Stay calm, and get back to the action

Now get out there and enjoy the ride—just don’t forget to flip it the right way if you go for a swim! 🌞🌊
